Why do people do it? I have heard the most popular reason is that the child’s name could be at the top of the list in the school rolls. I can agree if the fondness is towards the letter A,  but having to be first on the class register is madness. I have even heard people put double A’s(AA) to circumvent the problem of too many kids with names starting with A.

In India, its common to have unconventional spellings for names due to the influence of astrology and more specifically numerology, but there are limits. Double A’s,  Double L’s and uncommon ways of spelling a name different from convention cracks me up! No offense to all the parents, but just to make him/her feel special, there is nothing in a name.

How would you feel if the name ‘Manmohan’ was spelt or changed to ‘munmowhun’ or ‘Karthik’ was spelt as ‘carthick’ or ‘aditya’ was spelt ‘aadhithyaa’. It might be fine for you, but just think what the kid might go through in his school, surely will lead to a lot of tongue twisters and spelling errors, to say the least!
