Until last August, the city of Chennai had ‘CES ONYX’ doing the garbage collection and disposal work. They had been doing  really great work, and I must admit I miss them and am sure others would agree with me on that. Here are my reasons:

When ONYX was doing the job, no one used to know that they were around (no smell of garbage vans flying around at busy hours). This is because, they used to do the work either very early in the morning or quite late at night, when people don’t really move around. Actually they used to have two such rounds, one in the morning and one in the night. I feel such timed rounds was  a total blessing,  apart from the really committed work they did as a company, in keeping the city clean. If anyone from the ‘CES Onyx’ team sees this post, I want to say on behalf of the citizens of Chennai - Great Job Guys!

For various reasons, ONYX’s contract was not renewed and it was given to a new company called ‘Neel Metal Fanalca‘. I regret to comment that this new company’s work is not yet upto the mark- to say in the least. Every time I go to work on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), I am either behind a trash van loaded with trash or I am caught between two such van spread out over 100 meters or so. Actually the van hold trash more than their capacity. More often than not, that there is dirty, foul smelling water dripping from the van on to the road, leaving a mark on the roads. The only way to escape the stench is to somehow overtake the vans and zoom away to safety. Else, you can close your nose and use your mouth to breathe the whole time. of course you stand the risk of dying out of the smell, if you are weak nosed and cannot stand such a strong stench…

There have been similar complaints on ‘Neel Metal Fanalca’ in the local newspapers, and I am quoting them only for readers’ benefit.

I strongly feel that it is time that the authorities either get some order into garbage collection and disposal system or bring ONYX back!

  1. Actually I should say- ONYX actually brought in some dignity to the scavenging work they did- the cleaners really were neatly dressed and the way they handled trash and garbage was really professiona.. Kudos to ONYX!!!

  2. Very True!
