In the series under ‘Lesson of the day’, I shall cover the lessons as and when I learn them. I am no teacher, but I am just using this medium to share my lessons with you. Here is a link to my previous lesson of the day on Smile.

We learn many lessons throughout our life. Daily observations and happenings can be the best messengers of these lessons. Be sure you are aware of and observe them.

I happened to visit a small restaurant outside India. The people working there were young and doing part time work to pay their bills and also to help them complete college. This place has been quite common in my routine whenever I feel like eating out. It is always cozy and I had booked a table for four in advance. I have heard how much these waiters are paid and hence I always had been very understanding of them. We all went to dinner at the fixed time, yes, my usual table was ready. It was an awesome dinner that day and the service was very excellent. ‘Sara’, the usual one who takes my orders, seemed worried about something, but kept her usual cheerfulness till we finished our dinner.

As I went up to the counter to pay the bill, I overheard something. Sara was telling her fellow colleagues that the table we were seated at had broken just a few minutes before and that she had somehow used glue and duct tape to hold it together. I went up to her and said” Sara, I kind of knew there was some problem with the table, but it didnot matter to me as I wanted to have a good time and your cheerful service did not fail me. It is always a great feeling to dine in this restaurant. Great job!”

As I turned to leave, Sara said “Thankzzz”. I knew it had made her day and she very well deserved it. It didnot take much effort on my part to appreciate her service even though she is paid to work there. It felt good!

Zzzzzzzzz…Guess what, it was a dream I had today morning around 4 AM. I woke up with a smile and these lines flashed in my mind.

Appreciate the truth wherever it is, that’s what matters the most

This is the “Lesson for the Day”. How many times have we done this? To say thanks to a waiter for his service, to acknowledge the work done by your colleagues, to thank the office boys who run errands for you, to the small help that unknown people offer on the road- say by letting you ahead of them etc. the list is endless. All it takes is for us to appreciate, because it is a job well done, and you have observed that closely. It is not about what your duty is, but what you do beyond the call of your duty, that matters.

You receive what you give. Show appreciation to anyone and everyone who deserves it.
