In your professional career, a few tips to avoid being dragged into problems and altercations:
- Make no reference to a particular stance taken by anyone, explicitly. You never know when you might end up rubbing them in a manner that might prove costly.
- Make your point once and dont try to repeat the same, in an effort to prove or drive the point hard into the listener’s head.
- Show balance and do not convey anything (either in a positive way or negative way). Stay neutral. Remember your time will come when you can step up the pace.
- If needed, show a poker face. People always watch your face to see how arguments or comments have an impact on you. Your facial reaction is one easy indicator.
- You can show/convey passion about a topic under discussion or that which you are talking about. Be conscious and try to draw a line between being passionate about it and being arrogant about it.
- Being young, your passion can always be misconstrued as arrogance or emotionaly volatile.
- Always reserve the right to not believe anyone until you are thoroughly convinced.
- Always reserve the right to say ‘No’ or ‘Yes’ until you are clear about it.
- No one is the master of all trades. Analyze and follow your head with a clear mind.
- Don’t accept because someone talking to you is a pro at it.
- Be aware and clearly differentiate between people who self-market themselves and people who are genuine.
- Encourage when it is needed.
- Be frank, for there is no better lesson to be taught than frankness.
- Word your thoughts after careful and cautious consideration
- Nobody is your friend, nobody is your enemy. You are on your own.
- If you feel uneasy in a place, take a break.
